Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria for UP Board Class 10 and Class 12 Examinations
UP Board (UPMSP) eligibility criteria apply to both regular (school-enrolled) students and private (ex-student / repeater) candidates. The conditions differ slightly between the two categories and between Class 10 and Class 12.
Eligibility for Class 10 (High School) Examination
Regular Students:
Must be enrolled as a regular student in Class 10 in a UPMSP-affiliated school
Must have passed Class 9 from a recognized school (UPMSP affiliated or equivalent board)
Must be registered with UPMSP through their school in the current academic session
No minimum or maximum age limit is prescribed by the board
Private / Ex-Student Candidates:
Students who previously appeared in UP Board Class 10 but failed are eligible to re-appear as private candidates
Registration is done directly with UPMSP (not through a school)
Private candidates can appear for all subjects or only the failed subjects (compartment)
Students who have already passed Class 10 cannot re-appear to improve their marks
Important for Class 10 Students: Students cannot appear in the Class 10 board exam if they have not been registered by their school. Registration is done by the school through UPMSP's online portal during the prescribed registration window (usually August–September). Individual students cannot register themselves.
Eligibility for Class 12 (Intermediate) Examination
Regular Students:
Must be enrolled as a regular student in Class 12 in a UPMSP-affiliated school
Must have passed Class 10 (High School) from UP Board or any other recognized board (CBSE, ICSE, or state boards)
Must be studying in a specific stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts) and cannot switch streams after Class 11 admission
Private / Ex-Student Candidates:
Students who passed Class 10 from a recognized board and are not currently enrolled in Class 11 or 12 can appear as private candidates
Failed students can re-appear for compartment or full examination
Subject combinations must follow UPMSP norms for the chosen stream
Gap candidates (those who took a year or more gap after Class 10) are also eligible
Note: As of recent UPMSP rules, improvement examination (for already-passed students) is generally not available. Students who wish to improve their Class 12 marks may need to check current UPMSP notifications for any policy updates.
Stream Selection for Class 12:
Stream selection happens at the time of Class 11 admission. Once a student is enrolled in a stream, changing streams mid-session or before the board exam is not permitted. Students should choose their stream thoughtfully based on their Class 10 performance and future career goals.
Science stream requires a reasonable aptitude in Mathematics and Science
Commerce stream suits students interested in business, finance, and economics
Arts stream is the most flexible and covers history, geography, civics, and social sciences
Vocational combinations (e.g., Agriculture, Home Science-based) are available at select schools
Examination Fee and Registration
All eligible regular students are registered through their schools. The school submits the examination fee and student data on behalf of students through UPMSP's official online portal.
Approximate fee structure (subject to change — check latest UPMSP notification):
Regular students: ₹100 to ₹400 (varies by category and subjects)
Private candidates: ₹200 to ₹600 (varies by number of subjects)
Students from SC/ST or economically weaker sections may be eligible for fee exemption as per state government orders
Late registration with a fine may be permitted for a limited period after the regular deadline. Students who miss both deadlines are not eligible to appear in that year's examination.
Documents Required at the Time of Examination
On exam day, students must carry:
Admit card (issued by school — mandatory, entry denied without it)
School identity card (recommended as backup ID)
Documents such as Aadhar card or birth certificate are not required at the exam center but should be available for correction requests or school-level verification if needed.
